Opioid Use Disorder Among Women and Treatment

20th Annual NPWH Premier Women's Healthcare Conference

0.8 CE (NCC Code 2C), 0.8 Rx (NCC Code 2C)

Ursula A. Pritham, PhD, WHNP-BC, FNP-BC, SANE

The nationwide epidemic of opioid use disorders (OUD) and the adverse health consequences requires that more nurse practitioners (NPs) develop evidence-based strategies to reduce harm from the misuse of opioids and to prevent the development of an opioid use disorder. Strategies include screening for opioid use/misuse/abuse, educating patients about the risks associated with opioid misuse, and following evidence-based guidelines when prescribing opioids. Also, when OUD is identified, NPs qualified to provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine should follow evidence-based guidelines and prescribe within federal and state regulations. This presentation will provide NPs with information about screening, brief intervention, referral for therapy (SBIRT), and guidelines for the safe use of buprenorphine in the treatment of OUD in primary care settings.
