Irwin Goldstein, MD, IF

Objectives
• Identify normal and abnormal hormone levels of estradiol and progesterone and characterize
symptoms of low estradiol and low progesterone
• Describe treatment methods to reestablish normal estradiol and progesterone levels

Session Description
Estradiol and progesterone are sex steroid hormones, naturally synthesized in the ovaries and adrenal
glands from cholesterol, and are present in post-pubertal life until menopause. Normal estradiol and
progesterone values have been associated with female sexual function and persistent diminished estradiol
and progesterone blood test values may occur in menopause or following certain medications, have been
associated with female sexual dysfunction. Women with sexual dysfunction and persistent deficiencies in
estradiol and progesterone can be identified through history and physical examination and blood testing
and can undergo bioidentical replacement treatment with careful monitoring to reestablish sexual
function.
