17-06C AIM eModule Obstetric Hemorrhage

0.75 CE (NCC Code 2B)

Please read regarding obtaining CE credits for the AIM eModules:
NPWH is pleased to partner with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to approve the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) patient safety bundles for continuing education credit for APRNs. Although a certificate of completion is offered by AIM for viewing the modules, that certificate does not provide evidence of continuing education credit for nurses. To obtain approved continuing education credit, nurses will need to sign onto the NPWH education portal to register, review the CE criteria, and take the pretest before viewing each maternal safety module. A link from the NPWH education portal will take the participant to the maternal safety module. After completion of the module, the participant returns to the NPWH education portal to take the post test, complete the evaluation, and obtain the continuing education certificate from NPWH.

Intended Audience:
This continuing education (CE) activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners who provide care for women in any age bracket.

• CE Approval Period:Now through January 31, 2021
Estimated Time to Complete This Activity: .75 hour
CE Approval Hours: .75 Contact Hour of CE Credit

Goal Statement:
To improve overall maternal health outcomes through increasing alignment of national, state, and hospital level quality improvement efforts by educating nurse practitioners about the Obstetric Hemorrhage recommendations of the patient safety bundle developed through AIM's work with state teams and health systems.

Needs Assessment:
Research has indicated that delays in recognition, diagnosis, and treatment precede a majority of maternal deaths from hemorrhage, hypertension, infection, and venous thrombosis. The early signs of life-threatening illness in pregnant women is challenging because of the relative rarity of such events. Normal changes in physiology associated with pregnancy can generate significant changes in maternal vital signs with healthy women having a substantial physiologic reserve to compensate. Early recognition is essential because deterioration can be alarmingly rapid, with catastrophic consequences. The challenge is to balance the identification of women needing intervention without ‘over-medicalization’ of an otherwise normal physiological process.

Successful completion of this activity, 17-06C, requires participants to:
