Fragility fractures related to bone loss occur most often in older postmenopausal women and cause significant morbidity and mortality. Screening to assess fracture risk is underutilized and effective pharmacologic therapy is under prescribed. Knowledge about screening and risk assessment recommendations, how to interpret findings, and how to individualize pharmacologic treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis is needed to help older women avoid fractures that significantly affect quality of life.
