 Program Description

The prevalence of trauma and the potential for trauma exposure to have a profound negative impact on health and wellbeing have been established. Trauma may be described as individual, interpersonal, or collective. Screening for intimate partner violence, an example of interpersonal trauma exposure, is highly recommended but without further inquiry, individual and collective trauma exposures may remain undiscovered. This presentation will provide practical guidance for inquiry and response to recent and past trauma. The authors will propose that women’s health providers move beyond a limited approach to trauma screening within their clinical practice settings. Adoption of a framework for trauma informed primary care allows opportunity for a more broad-based approach. Case vignettes will be used to demonstrate how broad inquiry and a framework for trauma informed primary care applied in a women’s health setting will assist in reducing re-traumatization and promote healing.

 Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe a broad-based approach to screening for exposure to trauma.
  • Apply a framework for trauma-informed primary care to a women’s health setting.
